S1m0ne

The Movie:

Every season has one genuinely good film that goes largely overlooked by audiences. This Summer, that film would have to be writer/director Andrew Niccol’s “Simone”, a thought-provoking and well-acted film that only suffers from the film being a bit too overlong. Director/writer Niccol is largely known for writing the Jim Carrey vehicle “The Truman Show”, but should receive more notice for his directing debut, 1997’s “Gattaca”, a film that I consider a whisper away from perfection.

Al Pacino stars in “Simone” as Victor Taranski, a director who had his rise to fame in the 70’s and now is depressed to find himself in an era where more concern is geared towards financial statements than quality films that are about something. To top things off, the star (Winona Ryder) of his latest film has just walked off the set after her ludicrious demands weren’t met. His ex-wife, who’s now the studio head (Catherine Keener) reveals that, after this episode, his contract will likely not be renewed.

When everything’s fallen apart, Taransky is visited by a computer engineer (Elias Koteas) who he watched be booed off the stage at a convention nearly a decade ago. He’s about to pass away, but he’s recently finished “Simulation One”, a virtual reality program that can create a digital actress or actor. Taransky doesn’t accept, but the program finds its way into his hands thanks to the fact that the computer engineer left it to him in his will. Curious, Taransky starts work and - 9 months later - finds that he’s actually been able to remove the Ryder character from the entire movie and replace her with Simone (model Rachel Roberts in her debut).

Taransky wanted nothing more than the movie to be completed. While he clearly doesn’t predict success, Simone becomes an enormous hit. Instead of revealing that she’s a digital creation, Taransky goes ahead with the cover-up, leading to bigger and bigger methods of deception to try and hide the truth from a population that has fallen for the “actress”.

Niccol clearly was on the right track with the idea behind “Simone”, but it seems as if the screenplay was in need of some tightening before cameras rolled. The film’s theories about real vs. fake and several other topics are fairly well-stated, although they tend to become muddled as the movie starts to become overlong in the last act. While an interesting story, it’s also a rather slight one; while I was never bored, a good 20-25 minutes of editing could have helped the story run cleaner.

On the other hand, I was greatly pleased to see that Niccol’s visual style that he started in “Gattaca” continues here. Niccol and cinematographer Edward Lachman (”Erin Brockovich”) wonderfully attempt to recreate the same clean visual style that Slavomir Idziak and Niccol did with “Gattaca”. Again, especially with the studio lot sequences, scenes are washed with a pure light and subtle yellowed tone. There’s also Niccol’s tendency to present conversations in front of vast, empty surroundings (similar to a lot of scenes in Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore” and “Royal Tenenbaums”), which surprisingly actually brings the viewer closer in. From a technical standpoint, the one element that came up as rather disapointing was Carter Burwell’s score; while I’ve often praised the composer’s brilliant, brilliant work in the past, his score here didn’t sit well with me and often either didn’t add much to the scenes or came up in scenes where score didn’t feel necessary.

“Simone”’s performances are mixed, if largely pleasing. Pacino contributes one of his most low-key performances in recent memory, but still manages to offer a lively character. Evan Rachel Wood, as Taransky’s caring daughter, is also a highlight. Keener does fine with a character that isn’t particularly written with much depth. The oddest duo are Pruitt Taylor Vince and Jason Schwartzman as tabloid reporters after Simone. While the two actors provide fine performances, the characters really don’t have a great deal of point in the story and I almost felt as if their characters could have been deleted entirely. Winona Ryder contributes a nice minor few moments as the demanding actress and Rachel Roberts is fine in her scenes as Simone (although a concert sequence where she sings “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman” is too cutesy.)

“Simone” is a flawed movie - it becomes a bit scattered as a result of its extended running time and not all of the characters or possibilities with the stories are realized. The film also never quite figures on whether it wants to be more of a comedy or a drama. However, it’s a movie that’s well-acted, shows some ambition despite elements that are a bit predictable and has scenes that are certainly thought-provoking and should encourage discussion after the film. As it’s likely playing for the last week in theaters, “Simone” should be considered for viewing either at a matinee or when it arrives on DVD, likely later this year.

Signs tells the tale about a family in need of a miracle when there put against a army of hostel aliens trying to kill them. The movie main character is Mel Gibson and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, so before you see the movie don’t expect any gore or guts. Its safe to say that the movie don’t intend to scare you with blood or violent images just emotional and deep meaningful feelings it gives out. For me this is one of M. Night Shyamalan work out of others including, Unbreakable, The village and The sixth sense.

Acting in this movie is out of this world, the actors really get into their characters and do the movie a great deal of class. Mel Gibson plays a priest who has lost his faith due to the death of his wife, the two other remarkable small actors that play the children follow in Mel’s footsteps as actors. They all give a breath taking performance as M. Night Shyamalan’s movies are more emotional and deep, they were expected to deliver. The movie has so much heart throbbing moments which really make you feel for the family and it makes you think you actually know them in real life. Due to the great acting the movie was born, without the excellent acting of the 4 main actors this movie would of been fucked from the start.

The special effects in the movie are bog standard. The only CGI involved was at the end when one alien was created to do a attack scene in the last few minuets of the movie. For me i didn’t like it, the alien looked out of place there, you could clearly see it was CGI and even though it was a great idea in the storyline to have the alien jumping out like that, it never worked. For me they should of used a different method instead of lame ass computer drawings. Throughout the movie no major blood or gore was included just a few bits of CGI, however the lack of blood didn’t mean it ain’t horror and didn’t scare you because this movie clearly does.

Movies like this touch me, this one did for sure. The emotional depth this movie has is unreal, with its silent scenes and great lines it works so good, its unreal. The soundtrack is very slow and meaningless, its great, its unforgiving but also so cool. Parts are slow but other parts are just unreal, its so freaky si-fi. The visual scenes in the movie are great, i did notice that allot of the camera angles in the movie are very straight and very clear. This gives a really weird alien feel and this also adds to the feeling of the movie, along with great sound and great lines.

Altogether this movie is a really cool horror movie, its in depth and attention to detail provides the basis for a great movie and with a excellent director like M. Night Shyamalan, its bound to be a classic in everyone’s eyes.

Charade **** (out of 5) (1963)

Cast: Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy

Directed by Stanley Donen

A soon-to-be divorced woman need worry no more about her failing marriage when it is discovered her husband died after a tumble off of a moving train. She soon discovers her husband was not who he claims to be, in fact, he was a thief who, along with four other soldiers, buried $250,000 worth of Nazi gold and later sold it keeping all the profit to himself. Now the remaining soldiers are out to get the money from her so they can get their “rightful” share, and the only man she can trust turns out to be in cahoots with them. The problem is she has no idea where the money is, and knows no way to protect herself from the men willing to kill to get their money.

One of several forays director Donen made into Hitchcock mystery/comedy/romance territory and probably the best of his efforts. Grant and Hepburn are a true joy to watch, and the script is full of clever twists and turns to keep you guessing. The two leads are joined by a well-cast supporting crew and the music by Henry Mancici gives the film a 60s chic that is infectious. Immensely enjoyable and intelligent entertainment and one of the most overlooked gems of it’s time. Fans of NORTH BY NORTHWEST and REAR WINDOW should seek this film out as it’s about as close to classic Hitch as you can get without it actually being made by Alfred himself.

The Prime Minister (1941)

February 4, 1942

THE SCREEN; ‘Prime Minister,’ Screen Portrait of Disraeli, With John Gielgud in the Title Role, Now Seen at Art Theatre

Published: February 4, 1942

Considering the fact that Disraeli and George Arliss are synonymous in many minds, it seems almost an effrontery that any other actor should attempt a full-length, elaborate screen portrait of the great British statesman of Victorian times. Yet that is what the young English actor, John Gielgud, has boldly essayed in the British-made film, “The Prime Minister,” which opened at the Art Theatre (36 East Eighth Street) yesterday. To say the young man has failed woefully to present a convincing or captivating character is simply to say that he is being repaid for his audacity. For no one can play Disraeli as George Arliss plays himself.

But the trouble with Mr. Gielgud’s Disraeli is not merely one of performance. It is not exclusively due to its obvious theatricality—the fact that Mr. Gielgud plays Disraeli when a young man as though he were a highly offensive and effeminate popinjay, and then makes him out, as an old man, to be a doddering pickle-puss whose maunderings and crotchets are so affected that they almost smack of burlesque. It is not alone that Mr. Gielgud atrociously overacts.

The fault of his lumbering “Prime Minister” is that it lacks dramatic structure utterly. It is simply an hour-and-forty minutes of vignettes from Disraeli’s life—Disraeli as a young man being tempted to a political career by the very pretty persuasions of Mrs. Wyndham Lewis, his subsequent wife; Disraeli flubbing his first speech in the House of Commons; Disraeli blasting Lord Melbourne, visiting Victoria, hounding Gladstone and finally putting over a fast one on Germany. The core of a lukewarm love story occasionally comes through, but that is forever getting lost in the perplexities of English politics. Disraeli must have “gone to the country”—or threatened to do so—more often than a vegetable truck.

Mr. Gielgud is handsomely surrounded by a very distinguished cast of British actors—Diana Wynyard, Fay Compton, Owen Nares, Frederick Leister and Will Fyffe. But they, too, are horribly hobbled by a stiff and inadequate script. If Disraeli, Victoria, Mr. Gladstone and the other great ones of that day had been even half as windy and wooden as they appear in this film, the British Empire would be moldering in a dusty theatrical storehouse today.

Double Jeopardy **1/2 (out of 5) (1999)

Cast: Ashley Judd, Tommy Lee Jones, Bruce Greenwood, Annabeth Gish

Directed by Bruce Beresford

Libby Parsons is convicted for the muder of her husband, Nick, while on a boating trip. She lets her best friend adopt her young son while she goes to prison, but when her friend promptly vanishes, Libby gets suspicious. She is able to trace her whereabouts and discovers her husband still alive under assumed identity. Libby, already serving for the murder of her husband, is informed that she can now kill him with no punitive results since the “double jeopardy” rule states that you can’t be tried for the same crime twice. While on parole, she escapes and goes in search of her husband and son.

Good acting and competent directing can’t raise this far-fetched B-movie to the level ofcredibility it needs to be a great thriller. While offering an interesting premise, there’s really little else to keep the action afloat other than a series of unlikely and frustratingly poorly conceived events that raise the B.S. factor to the point of laughability. Tommy Lee Jones, who seems to now be typecast after THE FUGITIVE and U.S. MARSHALS as the guy to hire to track down criminals, ir sorely wasted in a supporting role as the down-and-out parole officer.

What’s wrong with DOUBLE JEOPARDY can be pinned to the shoddy screenwriting by David Weisberg and Douglas Cook, who were responsible for the equally boneheaded but successful actioner, THE ROCK. Making almost little sense, the viewer can’t truly get into the film due to too many inconcistencies and asking too much suspension of disbelief. For instance, why would a man who faked his own death and allowed his wife to take the rap live a series of fairly high-profile lifestyles? Why is it that when a convicted murderer breaks out of her parole camp and is on-the-loose and armed that there is only one person looking for her with any effort? How does Tommy Lee always seem to find out Ashley’s whereabouts with little or no evidence to go on? As the film builds itself out of implausibilities beginning from it’s very foundation, none of the events that happen ring true until ultimately what we’re left with is an implausible pill that’s too large to swallow.

Johnny English

After three Naked Gun movies and three Austin Powers movies, do we really need another spy spoof movie? Well, apparently someone thought we did, and they put up the money for Johnny English. On paper, it’s a good idea: Rowan Atkinson is a great comedic actor and John Malkovich plays a terrific villain. Toss in the pair of screenwriters who penned the last two James Bond films, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a hilarious box office hit, right? On the other hand, is it really possible to make a movie based on a British television ad?

Johnny English is a desk-bound employee of the British secret service. When all of England’s other secret agents are killed, Johnny English receives his first mission: to protect the British crown jewels. This mission is soon revised to: find the British crown jewels after English predictably bumbles their safe-keeping. Standing in his way is the evil Pascal Sauvage, a French prison baron with the worst of intentions. Luckily, English can rely on the help of his straight man/ sidekick Bough and a beautiful stranger named Lorna Campbell.

The best thing that can be said about Johnny English is that it’s short. The movie moves at a quick pace and is over before you know it. That said, too much time is spent setting up the gags. You can see every blunder coming a good five minutes before it happens and when it finally comes around, it’s not very funny. In fact, the best laughs don’t come from the script at all, but from the talented, stretchy-faced Atkinson.

Atkinson’s English is part Mr. Bean, part Inspector Clouseau, but the sum of these two parts is far less funny than one would expect. The high points (English lip-synching to ABBA in the bathroom mirror) are far outnumbered by low points (English emerging from a toilet covered in fecal matter).

Malkovich, as the French villain Sauvage, should have been the saving grace of this film. Unfortunately, the character-as-written is bland and uninspiring. There is little for Malkovich to do except don a creepy stare and speak in a French accent which can only be described as “extreme.”

In the style of Johnny English himself, the filmmakers blundered themselves into un-funny territory and failed at their mission to create a successful spoof. Atkinson is funny and charming as always, but given the below-par script of Johnny English, one wonders if Atkinson’s mission was only it to get away with some Queen Elizabeths.

Two Weeks Notice (Video Preview).avi18.83 MBDOWNLOAD

Movie: Having watched a number of independent films lately, I felt the need to watch something a bit more mainstream. A friend twisted my arm and we ended up watching Two Weeks Notice, a film generally referred to as a romantic comedy. The movie centered on a young left leaning activist attorney played by Sandra Bullock and a wealthy developer played by Hugh Grant. Both of these actors are known as heavy hitters in the comedy genre so given anything from a computer generated script with no humanity to a well crafted script by a host of top talent, they should provide exactly what the corporation orders. Unfortunately, they didn’t.

Lucy (Sandra), established her leftist politics early on in the film by protesting a developer’s tearing down of a historically rich building with her two friends. The wrecking crew is about as interested in what she thinks as they are in what the cost of tea in China is (i.e.: not at all). George (Hugh), is a wealthy billionaire industrialist looking for a new attorney. He will only hire a woman, and prefers a cute one for obvious reasons. The two meet when she tries to protest his company’s proposed destruction of a community center in her neighborhood. That she’s a Harvard graduate with lots of snap is enough for him to offer her the job where he’s promise to leave the center alone.

The two work overtime showing the audience their credentials-she’s on call 24/7 and he’s always chasing cuties. Of course at some point you’d ask why he was so rich if he was as dumb as he appears and some of that is explained away, clumsily I might add, by his brother who indicates that George is the face and he’s the brains. Her character also goes overboard trying to establish that she’s still quite liberal and has a heart although it also seems forced most of the time.

In the end, the two fall in love but are too close to one another to realize it and go their separate ways. After a series of slapstick misadventures, the two part until George is forced to tear down the community center by his brother. This being a formula driven comedy geared to the least common denominator, you “know” they’ll end up together and all will be right with the world so the story probably won’t disappoint people looking for a comfortable date movie but it’s a far cry from the classics of yesteryear where the leads actually seemed to have some chemistry with one another.

Picture: I saw the widescreen version which presented a 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen picture that was pretty clear. There were no real problems that I noticed in it which should be expected in a movie with a 60 million dollar budget.

Sound: The sound was presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital English or a French track and English, French, and Spanish subtitles. The vocals were very clear.

Extras: The audio commentary had Hugh Grant, Sandra Bullock and Director Marc Lawrence. It was a mixed bag with an occasional tidbit worthwhile but unless you’re a complete fan, more of a pass. There was a deleted scenes section that was filler more than anything else. A branching feature that I couldn’t get to work. Trailer for the show and the HBO behind the scenes feature for the movie which was pretty good. A filmography for the director and lead cast was included but too limited to be of much value.

Final Thoughts: If it sounds like I’m bagging on the movie, it’s only because it wasn’t as good as I expected. I’ve seen each of the leads do much better and the biggest problem is that there really didn’t seem to be any chemistry between them. Without chemistry, the smaller details like how unbelievable it is for Grant to be in charge of a multibillion dollar company yet unable to handle ANY OTHER aspect of his life a bit far fetched (to be generous). The supporting cast did fine jobs but were so limited in what they were allowed to do (i.e.: air time), they couldn’t elevate the movie beyond the flavor of the week nature that it was obviously going for. In all, I’ll be generous some more and give this one a rating of Rental but that’s only for lonely women looking for some fantasy in their lives along with the men they’re dating.

Rookie, The

Eastwood may be a well respected director these days, crafting such Academy Award winners as Unforgiven, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby, but he has made a few duds in his time as well.  Anyone remember FirefoxTrue CrimeAbsolute Power?  Blood Work?  If you do, don’t you kinda wish you didn’t?

The Rookie was Eastwood’s attempt to direct a buddy cop flick, very much in the vein of 48 Hrs. and Lethal Weapon.  He didn’t succeed.  The primary reason stems from the fact that those movies had good chemistry, clever dialogue, and a real sense of irreverence that made the banter between the characters infectious.  The Rookie simulates the feel of banter without actually having the depth of characterizations to make us feel we truly know these guys as anything but one-dimensional archetypes.  It also doesn’t help that the script by Boaz Yakin (The Punisher) and Scott Spiegel (Evil Dead II)  is mounted on an insipid plot.

This plot concerns an underground organization of car thieves, led by a German named Strom (Julia, Presumed Innocent), who steal the best of cars, dismantle them in the local chop shops, and then sell them to the highest bidders.  Eastwood plays Nick Pulovski, a down-and-out cop on the grand theft auto beat, that just lost his partner in a bust of Strom’s latest catch.  Pulovski is pulled off the case now that it belongs to homicide, but he is still hell-bent in his determination to take Strom down.  Nick is assigned a hotshot rookie detective, an impeccably gifted but very green new guy named David Ackerman (Sheen, Major League), who knows his stuff, but has had a lifelong bout of freezing up when situations become tense.

The Rookie is a truly poor movie, made almost acceptable because of Eastwood’s dry humor and a few memorable scenes.  It is gratuitously violent and highly sensationalized, although perfectly in keeping with the kinds of action movies churned out by Hollywood during these years.  It does feature an interesting array of actors, although some of them are not really cast well.  Most notable in this regard is Raul Julia, who does make for an intelligent and charismatic adversary, but his underwritten role suffers greatly by the fact that his Latino-flavored accent is too strong to buy him as a German, no matter how many "zese", "zose", and "zem"s he utters liberally.  Sonia Braga (Angel Eyes, Empire) doesn’t even bother trying.

Luckily for us in the audience, Eastwood realizes just how ridiculous the premise of the film is, so he decides to have fun with the project, sending it wildly over the top during certain moments for some tongue-in-cheek laughs.  Perhaps he should have just made the entire thing a complete lark and stripped out all pretense of seriousness, and we might be looking at a better film here.

The one complaint about Eastwood as a director that has managed to stick with him throughout his career is his lack of ability to squeeze out the excess in his films down to a traditional running length, and at over two hours, The Rookie is a good twenty minutes longer than it really needed to be.  Most scenes go on longer than necessary, and some exist for no real reason at all, to the detriment of the overall momentum,

For all of its flaws and excesses, The Rookie might still provide a decent evening’s worth of entertainment for Eastwood’s fans (like myself) and those that love bloody, comical cop action films of any variety.  Some guilty pleasure entertainment may certainly be had, provided you take it about as serious as Eastwood intended, which is to say, not at all.

The Movie: When you are ready to watch Shanghai Noon, get ready for a wild ride. Starring Jackie Chan as an Imperial guard sent to bring back Princess Pei Pei (the always amazing Lucy Liu) after she has been kidnapped and held hostage in America, Shanghai Noon injects Jackie’s always impressive martial arts with a setting new to his antics. Owen Wilson co-stars with Jackie as an outlaw with ethics (imagine that) as he never steals from women and can barely shoot a gun. I never thought that the combination of Jackie and Owen would work, but much to my surprise it did, and the end result is a funny action/comedy with plenty of rousing situations and amusing settings.

The Picture: The picture is amazing on this disc. There are no problems with pixelization, or any other DVD-related problem. The anamorphic picture is beautiful, and it’s a shame that every disc can’t look like this one. The Amazon.com reviewer states that “The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD opens with a hazy, exaggerated look,” but I didn’t notice the problem, as it opened with a crisp picture and stayed that way throughout. The blacks were dark, without any evidence of pixelization and the flesh tones were natural.

The Sound: The sound, like the picture, is simply amazing on this disc. The Dolby 5.1 audio track really great, and offers surround sound at many points (almost all points) throughout the disc. The bass is surprisingly deep and offers a rich addition to the score that is seamlessly integrated into the soundtrack. The dialogue is clear, and understandable throughout, which just cements the superlative nature of this audio track.

The Extras: The extras on this disc are quite extensive, and a blast to watch.

Audio Commentary - the audio commentary features director Tom Dey, along with actors Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan. Having already seen the movie, I jumped straight into the audio commentary and learned quite a bit about the movie. The commentary has commentary throughout with minimal dead scenes, and is a joy to listen to. I really enjoyed the commentary and the comments between the two actors on really becoming friends during filming and how it affected them on the set.

Deleted Scenes - There are a total of seven deleted scenes from the movie, all featuring a commentary by director Tom Dey, Jackie Chan, and Owen Wilson on why they weren’t included, how they didn’t fit into the movie, and so on. These deleted scenes are fun to watch and would have been interesting to see in an extended cut of the film, which would have added a whole other subplot.

Featurettes:
Making an Eastern Western - this featurette talks about the different mixes of the costumes and cultures of the East and West. It features interviews with both Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan talking about the assimilation of Jackie into a whole different culture among other various parts of the movie.
Partners - This featurette focuses on the two characters in the film who each have different goals and customs and the friendship between them. Featuring an interview with director Tom Dey, he delves into the humor inherent in these two different characters.
Jackie’s Comedy - This is an extremely funny featurette because it deals with Jackie’s great use of silent comedy. He based a lot of his comedy on the great Buster Keaton and other physical comedians. This featurette has interviews with Tom Dey, Jackie Chan, and Owen Wilson. Another focus of this featurette is a focus on Jackie’s combination of martial arts and comedy - both of which are great in this movie.
Western Stunts, Eastern Style - Obviously, from the title, you can tell that this featurette focuses on the stunts and fighting parts of the movie. They talk about the two different kinds of takes they do along with behind-the-scenes looks at the storyboards, model scenes, along with an interview with Peter J. Hampton, the production designer and Richard Chew, A.C.E., the editor. It talks about Jackie’s improvisation and his pseudo-direction of most of the stunt scenes.
Hanging with Roy and the Kid (both a Featurette along with a link to the scene from the movie) - You can really tell that they put a lot of effort into these featurettes, this one especially. This featurette talks about the hanging scene where Jackie and Owen are rescued from imminent death. There are a lot of behind the scenes shots and it’s actually very interesting to see all of the fun they have behind the scenes and all the work that goes into one shot, including the medics, the set-up, testing, and the final shot. It’s nice that right after watching the featurette, there’s a direct link to watch the scene in the movie so you can get a better understanding of all that they were talking about.
Action Overload - This featurette is just a montage of all of the action from the movie, and while there’s really nothing to it, it is action overload.
Choo Choo Boogie - The Choo Choo Boogie talks about a scene that was ultimately cut from the movie, showing a lot of the different behind-the-scenes looks, including computer animations, modeling, blueprints, storyboards, and more. It really shows that there was a lot of preparation that went into this shot, that when all was said and done, was cut from the film. At least it’s on the DVD though - before or after you watch the featurette, you have a chance to watch the deleted scene - Wang’s Wild Ride.

Shanghai Surprise - this section features 2 different games, Roy’s Revenge and Chon’s Challenge. Each of the games features small clips from the movie which require you to watch a certain scene closely, after which they will ask a question, or to remember scenes from the movie. The games are quite fun, and probably the best games I’ve seen on a DVD yet. After the game, which you end up winning no matter how many you got wrong, you are taken to a special scene. The first scene is a videomatic of the train disaster, once again, a scene that a lot of work went into, that was ultimately cut from the film. After the second game, they discuss the drinking game that Owen and Jackie paly in the tub. They give the subtitles for the game, talkign about crabs and drinking, and even though it really doesn’t make sense, it’s still quite funny.

Music Video - A music video of Uncle Kracker’s song Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. It’s nothing special, just blends scenes from the movie into the video, as do most music videos from movie soundtracks.

Theatrical Trailer - pretty self-explanitory, it contains the one trailer from the film - it would have been nice to have tv spots and/or international trailers, but with the plethora of other extras on the film, it’s ok.

Conclusion: In conclusion, Disney did a great job with this disc. The special features are amazing and the commentary is an added bonus that really adds value to this disc. The audio and video are superb, the best combination of the two I’ve seen in a while. This disc cannot be missed, any fans of the film (such as myself) will not be disappointed, and people watching for the first time will be amazed at the vast amount of extras along with the crisp audio and video. Disney did a great job with this disc, and although the price is a little prohibitive ($30), it, in my opinion, is worth every penny. A great disc - I just wish all DVDs were this well packaged and presented.

Breaks, The Reviewed By iF Magazine Posted 02/25/01 09:40:59

"Derek is a loser." (Pretty Bad)

It doesn’t matter what color his skin is - he just isn’t cutting it. Orphaned from Ireland he was found by a black fisherman whose wife and he took Derek (Mitch Mullany) in and raised him in Compton along with the fisherman’s three biological children. Now his adopted father is long gone and Derek lives under Momma’s rules and Momma’s brass hanger. But Derek just can’t get a break. And when Momma finds him having a little too much fun with a girl in her home she kicks Derek out for good …unless he can bring home some milk by dinnertime and show some responsibility. The set up of THE BREAKS is about as intriguing as well, a carton of milk. And scribed by Mullany who wrote himself an easy role, he gets to act like an idiot for an hour and a half and get paid for it. Mullany talks "ghetto" using appealing dialogue such as, "lick my ass, lick it hard" and "all-ight" spaced between profanity that would make a truck driver blush. The fact that Mullany steals about 15 minutes from PULP FICTION for his own parody pleasure wouldn’t have been worth mentioning except for the fact that he can’t even parody it right and make it funny. It doesn’t work. But not much does in THE BREAKS.Even Chris Farley’s brothers Kevin and John somehow are swooped into this mess as trouble making cops out to nail Derek. Kevin and John may very well have some of that Farley gusto, spirit and charisma that Chris embodied but from watching this you’d never now.– Pamela Harland
